Im/migrant Home Care Workers in Manitoba During the Pandemic: Exploitation, Precarity, and ResistancePresented by:
Dr. Mary Jean Hande — Principal Investigator of Migrant Care Work and The Geopolitics of Aging in Place During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Assistant Professor, Sociology, Trent University.

In this presentation, we will present an overview of a three-year SSHRC-funded participatory research project called Migrant Care Work and The Geopolitics of Aging in Place During the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is partnered with Migrante Manitoba. The project explored the workplace/worklife experiences of 19 Manitoba-based im/migrant home care workers with whom we conducted a series of interviews and questionnaires. To contextualize workers’ stories, we also interviewed 7 migrant advocates, activists, surveyed 15 settlement workers, and analyzed related government and organizational policies and statistics. We will share challenge areas identified in this research including chronic/deepening workplace/life precarity, home care privatization and racialized and gendered violence. We will wrap up with questions and recommendations to address these challenge areas.
