Disclosure and Accommodation Planning:
A new approach and interactive tool to support workers with chronic and episodic disability

The struggle faced by workers with chronic physical and mental health conditions when deciding whether to seek support from their workplace is a common challenge. It involves weighing the risks of potential loss of privacy or reputation against concerns about job difficulties and changes in work performance if adequate support is not received. Both workers and workplace representatives often lack clarity on what aspects to discuss and what kind of support would be helpful.
To address the complexity of these disclosure decisions, a new online and interactive tool called the Job Demands and Accommodation Planning Tool (JDAPT) has been developed. This tool is a result of a collaborative effort by the Accommodating and Communicating about Episodic Disabilities (ACED) research partnership, which includes researchers, health charities, people with lived experiences, and workplace representatives. The JDAPT guides users through a series of simple questions about their job demands, tasks, and working conditions. Based on the responses, users receive a personalized list of support ideas that are relevant to their specific work situation.
The presentation will describe Canadian data highlighting the challenges around disclosing personal health information and receiving support, the JDAPT tool, and early evaluation results, as well as a discussion about the JDAPT’s potential to help workers and workplaces by focusing on solutions, not medical diagnoses and symptoms.
A participatory breakout session and discussion will also take place.
